I’m always looking for new ways to wear some of the statement pieces in my closet. Here are 9 different tips on how to wear a white dress shirt.
1. ON IT’S OWN
Hey, there’s nothing wrong with a classic white dress shirt. Sometimes it looks just perfect on it’s own. Make sure it’s well pressed and you’re all set. Choosing a shirt with a bit of a spin on the classic look like my shirt by Comme Des Garcons can help.
2. WHITE ON WHITE
Try layering your white shirt with more white on top. Sometimes it’s hard to pull this look off (especially with white pants) without looking like a painter. I opted for my DIY creme lace sweatshirt on top. The peek of the white collar can add a nice formal feel to a look.
Hmm. Not a trend for everyone, but damn I love my Zana Bayne Harness. I wore it here backwards. It truly is a surprisingly versatile piece. She said it herself that she loves to see people wear her harnesses with white dress shirts, so, this one is sort of a given.
4. STATEMENT NECKLACE
Layering a big statement necklace over a white dress shirt can be all it takes to transform it. I’ve been kind of obsessed with huge necklaces layered over dress shirts so this one isn’t much of a surprise for me. Photographed here is my layered spike ASOS necklace.
5. CROP TOP
A look I’ve been rocking for a while now, a good solid crop top action never hurt anyone. I love the proportion it gives an outfit. Worn here is my thrifted crop top. If you want to try this look just buy an oversized t-shirt and chop away! Easy as that.
Although I love a huge statement piece of jewelry, there’s something great about an unexpected pop of an accessory. I bought these bronze cuffs for exactly that purpose. Worn under the sleeve of the shirt, you only get an little glimpse of them here and there. Search etsy to find the perfect cuffs for you (and for cheap!!)
7. ADD A COLLAR
Detachable collars have seemed to make a triumphant return lately. I’m lucky enough to own this yellow leather Eleven Objects collar which I absolutely cherish. If you don’t want to break the bank for this look try a DIY. You might be surprised by the wear you get out of one.
8. SHIRT ON SHIRT
This specific shirt was screaming to have stripes under it. I couldn’t resist myself. Whatever the case with the shirt you choose, adding a patterned shirt under a white shirt can add that extra something to a look. Try it out!
9. ADD SOME SPIKES
My studded vest is really my baby. The fruits of my labour. I still cherish it. I know it may be a bit of a cliche, but the contrast of a dress shirt and something more… “unconventional”… really can make for a cool look. I love trying unexpected layers. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. That’s the fun of fashin.
Hopefully this inspires you to try to get a bit more wear out of some of the key pieces in your closet!
