I, like many women, have teased, pinned, dyed, straightened, and curled my hair until it’s a shadow of its thick, former self. One of the most frustrating and time consuming tests of my patience has been trying to create a big and beautiful bun, also known as the deliciously named “donut bun.”
Like the Houdini of beauty, I have learned how to turn my flat, fine hair into the perfect bun. No, I didn’t order a late night new and improved product off an infomercial for only $19.99. In fact, I found everything I needed in my apartment. If you own a few hair accessories and a single sock, you too can have a perfect donut bun (and if you act now, we’ll throw in free shipping and a knife sharpening set!).
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- A brush or comb,
- A handful of bobby pins
- A (preferably) clean sweat sock
- 2 hair elastics
STEP 1

Pull your hair into a ponytail, using an elastic to secure it. Make sure to create the ponytail where you want the center of the bun to sit.
STEP 2

Cut the toe off of a sweat-sock and roll it inside-out to create a donut shape.
STEP 3

Slip your ponytail inside the middle of sock donut.
STEP 4

Tease your ponytail with a brush or comb.
STEP 5

Lean forward and use your teased hair to cover the sock as much as possible.
STEP 6

Slip the second elastic over the sock donut to secure your hair into place.
STEP 7

Twirl, tuck, and pin the ends of your hair into the base of your completed donut bun.
To create a bigger bun, use a thicker sock; the bigger, the better. If possible, choose a sock colour that is similar to your hair colour, so it will blend in if your hair shifts during the day.
They say a magician never tells her tricks, but like a good recipe, the donut bun should be shared and enjoyed by everyone.
