It’s about time Mara Hoffman did a full-out fashion show! I’ve loved attending her presentations during previous seasons, but navigating the massive crowds of admirers inside The Box (the smallest room at the Lincoln Center where presentations are held), was always a challenge for me since I have the grace and subtlety of a T-Rex. So thank you, Mara. And selfishness aside, the enormous crowd that came to her show at NYFW, is more proof that she can pull off the bigger spectacle and that all this attention and her success is very well-deserved.
Her inspiration for Fall 2012 was “South American Shaman Cowboys.” I was sold on this idea just from reading it on the show notes and, as expected, the collection featured an assortment of beautiful original prints, and Hoffman’s signature bohemian-luxe aesthetic. The prints were “Magic Carpet,” Stars, Meteorite (featuring astrology and Mayan calendar references), and Kilim (inspired by Turkish prayer rugs). There was also intricate beading on many of the pieces, and knits and coats featured leather appliqué details – a trend seen on many a runway this week. The collection also included an array of dresses, from long chiffon flowing gowns, to short fitted dresses with sexy cut-out details. South American Shaman Cowboys also know how to accessorize, and Magic Carpet print scarves were worn throughout the show, under wide-brimmed hats in black and brown.

Spotted in the first row? Ex-MTVers, Louise Roe, in a #totesamaze pair of neon pink Mara Hoffman pants from the Spring collection, and Whitney Port, wearing a Mara Hoffman skirt from the Spring collection. Whitney was sitting with Nigel Barker and Miss J Alexander, who has provided me with endless entertainment this season (his facial expressions and judging eyes are priceless). In addition to attending shows, she also had her own for Whitney Eve (more on this soon) and if you were ever wondering what happened to her relationship with Kelly Cutrone after The City finale left things up in the air… like Mara Hoffman, People’s Revolution produced her show too.
Stay tuned for more from New York Fashion Week, coming right up.
