Whether through film or fashion, we’re sure you’ve come across the notorious Chloë Sevigny in one way or another. She’s a cult classic queen with a handful of hip fashion design gigs under her belt; not to mention her alternative, ~indie~ style is recognized (and wildly appropriated), by the masses. From small-town teenage rebel to wildly proclaimed it-girl, take the time and learn more about the not-so-elusive Chloë Sevigny.
Born in Massachusetts and raised in Connecticut, Chloë was a sweet child who went to summer camp and swept tennis courts at a country club.
During her teenage years, she began to rebel and experiment with drugs. She described herself as “depressed” and a “loner”, and was forced into attending Alcoholic Anonymous meetings by her Catholic parents.
When she was 17, she relocated to Brooklyn, New York. It was here where she was /discovered/ by an editor at “Sassy Magazine”. Chloë later disclosed that the editor just really liked her hat.
Interning at Sassy garnered her quite a following, and she subsequently became involved in a plethora of independent films — one of them being “Kids,” in which she played an HIV-positive teenager.
From 2006 to 2011, Sevigny played the second of four Mormon wives to a polygamist husband on the HBO series “Big Love”.
Chloë was approached to collaborate with Opening Ceremony to design a collection in 2008. The collaboration has since stemmed into 4 collections; one of which includes leather-denim overalls that requires no expansion because they are exactly how they sound.
She is currently playing a transgendered assassin in her new television “Hit & Miss.”
Connoted pretentiousness aside, Chloë Sevigny is a style icon to the masses. Her ability to gender bend and blur the unconventionality of what is predominately “male” or “female” is what perhaps makes her such a stand-out in a sea of ~safe~ cookie cutter girls… (and that reference to gender bending legitimately has nothing to do with her latest role and the prosthetic genitalia involved).
Although her acting gigs aren’t that varied (they’re all very *risky*), and her look hasn’t evolved all that much in the past 20 years, delving into the past (and present!) of this pop culture sensation is endlessly fascinating. Besides the fact she has implied she hates Canada (which is O-M-G scandalizing), we’ve only got “big love” for Chloe Sevigny, and can only hope that spending our days perusing fun hats may lead us to our own big break.
