A Brief History Of The Side Slit

When celebrities fixate on a red carpet trend, they wear it relentlessly until it is completely devoid of it’s *shock* factor. Angelina claimed her “right legged” notoriety after showing up to the 2012 Oscars with her right leg out…at all times. But she has also appeared at a number of red carpet events wearing a number of side slitted gowns over the years. So many, in fact, that I’ve grown to believe that she buys her dresses in bulk. Because like…where would they come from otherwise? They are literally so plentiful it is obscene and almost upsetting.

But moving forward, as increasingly more celebs begin to hop on this ~sexy leg~ trend, new and innovative ways to approach it have made appearances. Some are hits, and some are misses…but I’ll let you come to your own conclusions.

K-Stew werks the trend with a printed Balenciaga dress. Where are the sneakers, tho?

Gweneth’s hair goes on one side and her gown’s side slit goes the other way. Balanced asymmetry!! ~_~

For something previously associated with Miss America evening gowns or really tacky satin prom dresses, the side slit dress has garnered a very classy reputation as of late. Although many have agreed that the revealing trend is overtly sexy, in hindsight, it is technically one step up from the super mini dresses that have the tendency to result in unfortunate wardrobe malfunctions.

Much like the side boob transformed into a nearly full on boob, Angie’s famed “right leg” has evidently triggered opportunistic designers to cultivate excuses for double side slits to exist – as we saw at Sunday’s MMVAs.

Carly Rae wore her daring dress with a Man Repeller x Dannijo necklace. Call me maybe? Okay, Carly Rae.

The more I watched Shenae flounce around on stage, the more I got nervous that I was going to see something I didn’t really want to see. But it didn’t happen, so it’s okay.

I guess this type of stuff is ideal for celebs who don’t show outward leg favoritism, because like, we should all be for equality and stuff like that. But, this kind of borders on uncomfortable. Maybe. Perhaps because the double side slit gives the illusion of a weird pseudo-bodysuit with strange, pseudo-curtains hanging over parts that need to be covered. But it’s excusable, I guess, because it is ~fashion~ and Shenae Grimes is a ~risk-taker~.

The side slit is discrete when you’re standing, and punch-you-in-the-face dramatic when you’re swooshing around with Brad Pitt on your arm. Endless red carpet posing opportunities. Werk the camera. Swoosh swoosh. TMZ is speechless. Perez Hilton loves you. We all love you. You are a fashionista!

Win-win from all angles. Literally.

Also, feel free to follow Angie’s Right Leg on Twitter. Because that’s going to be a really relevant and important part of your day.
