AUGUST 16th, 1948
Baseball Hall of Famer Babe Ruth dies at age 53. Babe would spend his most successful seasons as a New York Yankee. Years later Madonna would date a Yankee; Alex Rodriguez (before promptly allowing Kate Hudson & Cameron Diaz to fight over her sloppy seconds).
AUGUST 16th, 1954
The first issue of Sports Illustrated was first published by Time Inc on August 16th, 1954. It featured the Milwaukee Braves and New York Giants on the cover. Madonna herself is no stranger to baseball as she portrayed “Mae Mordabito” a professional baseball player in the 1992 film A League of Their Own.

Ringo Starr was picked to replace Pete Best as the drummer for the Beatles. Best had been with the group for about 2 and a half years at the time.
AUGUST 16th, 1977
Elvis passed away. Effectively ending an era and his “gold lame phase.” Or as we see it – the King gave way for the Queen.
AUGUST 16th, 1983
Actress Carrie Fisher weds musician Paul Simon. The couple would separate after 11 months of marriage due in part to Carrie’s drug use. Although they would reconcile a year later, in time to attend Madonna’s nuptials in 1985 together (left).
AUGUST 16th, 1985
Madonna weds Sean Penn in an elaborate cliff-top ceremony on her 27th birthday. At the time, skeptics said it wouldn’t last … and they were right. They would divorce 4 years later.
