With the upcoming U.S election, we figured it was time to talk politics and discuss a very serious international matter – fashion. Although national leaders are often dressed in a very conservative and predictable manner, some spouses (past and present) have set a new style standard when it comes to being a first lady. With avid interests in fashion and access to the world’s top designers, these first ladies make politics seem far more ~alluring~ .

An obvious choice, but no best dressed list could be complete without the current first lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama. An icon of American style, Michelle Obama breaks “fashion rules” by wearing the same outfit more than once, and isn’t above donning H&M and J.Crew to political gatherings. When getting dolled up for red carpet or presidential events, Michelle Obama often sports designer dresses and ends up looking like a modern day princess.

The late Jackie Kennedy Onassis was first lady from 1961-1963 when husband John F. Kennedy was the 35th American president. During her reign in the political public eye, her White House wardrobe was primarily created by French born fashion designer Oleg Cassini. Through suits, dresses and pillbox hats, Jackie O became known as a 60s icon. After leaving the White House, she reinvented her look and traded in modest skirts for jeans, turtlenecks, headscarves and her famous round sunglasses. Jackie Kennedy Onassis remained a fashion leader long after she was first lady, as her trendsetting style is still influential today.

Ok, so Grace Kelly wasn’t a First Lady per se, but she was the Princess of Monaco, which is close enough. A famous actress before marrying Prince Rainier III, Grace Kelly was always dressed ready for the red carpet. Her timeless beauty and elegant demeanor made her a favourite princess and celebrated fashion icon. She even had a Hermès bag named after her; if that isn’t the ultimate style compliment I don’t know what is!
