Toronto’s synth-pop-disco-soul queen, RALPH, has us entranced with her effortlessly cool ~vibes~ and hypnotic vocals. Her level of hip is aspirational–you know–the kind where you have daily ‘I-wish-I-were-her’ moments. But no worries, because in her latest single, she reassures us that she’s really just your “Girl Next Door”… and that she’s totally worthy of our admiration.
We recently took some *Cool Lessons* with RALPH where she outlined her summer trend forecast. From resurgent ‘60s stretchy headbands to flowy skirts contrasted with bulky sneakers, let’s just say it’s gonna be a ~sizzlin’ summer~
Check out RALPH’s latest single and her trend predictions below:
See-through everything. Bags, rain jackets, shoes, plastic/PVC is a cute look right now, as seen on the runways of Chanel, Valentino and Balenciaga. I just got a pair of Maryam Nasir Zadeh ‘Olympia’ wedges in orange and I’m obsessed.
Stretchy headbands. Specifically, wide black ones that channel Euro films of the 1960s. Practical for someone with bangs so yes, i will be adopting this trend.
Yellow and Purple (specifically soft shades like lilac). I feel like these are two hot colours for spring/summer, partly because my nail girl told me that they’re the most asked for popular polish colours right now, but also because I’m seeing them everywhere on the runway (Erdem,Tibi, Oscar De La Renta) and street. I’m so down, I’ve been really feeling yellow and love the combo of bright yellow paired with shades of grey.
Statement “art” earrings. Obviously I’m not getting rid of my go-to gold hoops but I’m really interested in the movement towards conceptual earrings that look like art, with lots of dangling shapes, stones and line drawings of faces. I just got a pair of Biko x Andrew Coimbra ‘Magma’ studs and they look so good with slicked back hair and a sleek black outfit.
Playing with the contrast of long dresses/skirts and chunky sneaker combo. I feel like people were doing it last summer but now the shoe has changed to this ultra-chunky, dad sneakers so the style is a little different. I especially love when the look is an unexpected pairing of pieces – for example, a flowy, feminine dress and a thick, futuristic looking sneaker like the ones Louis Vuitton did. Also life hack – if you’re trying to save $$ and don’t wanna invest in the trend, Sketchers has some pretty decent knock off versions of the chunky sneak 😉
“Girl Next Door” is definitely a summer bop that we look forward to blasting while we lay back in our lawn chairs, soak up the sun, and sip on sangria. This season, keep an eye out for these emerging fashion trends, and more music from RALPH.
