Hate to break it to you… but cold weather is well on it’s way. Winter. It’s coming. Here’s how to battle the harmful effects of winter on your hair, nails and skin.
Wind, over-dried indoor air, sudden changes in temperature – yeah, winter will do a number on your poor, poor skin. Stiff dry skin, flakes & redness? No, thanks.
Make sure you pack your diet full of the vitamins that’ll strengthen your skin – foods with Vitamin E are great. Like what, you ask? Almonds, peanut butter, spinach and broccoli will up your intake quite nicely. Peanut butter… mmmm.
Olive oil and primrose syrup, along with generous water intake will soften up your skin. Drink up!
Avoid brittle hair, and promote growth with foods rich in Biotin and Calcium. (Not so fun fact: your hair grows slower during winter.) Get your daily dose by loading up on beans, eggs, milk, yogurt and cheese.
Get a humidifier. Yeah you’re probably like “whaaaat? I’m not a nine-year-old with a cold.” And you’re certainly right. But your central heating is sucking the life out of your skin and hair. Especially at night. So get a humidifier.
CARE FOR YOUR HAIR
Ditch the blow dryer and iron. Heat styling dries the hell out of your hair all year round. Add on the immensely moisture draining effects of the cold – you’re doubled down. And we all know how irritating static dry hair on a winter day can be.
Another little tip: lessen damage to your locks by styling it in a bun, braid or twisting it up, instead of leaving it down and blowing in the wind.

Go moderate with your shower temperature. Water too hot, especially in the winter, will leave your skin stiff and dehydrated and make you prone to cracking. Also, add a few drops of oil to your bath, to help retain your skin’s moisture.
Apply moisturiser immediately after showering, while your skin is still damp for optimal absorption.
HANDS + NAILS
Wear mittens/gloves. Probably the simplest step to take. Avoid harsh cold – avoid cracked hands.
If you change your polish often, chances are your remover is largely responsible for dry, painful, cracked cuticles. Dwindle down the damage – try Sula Paint & Peel polishes – and change ‘em up as often as you wish.
Treat your cuticles with plain yogurt. Seriously. Apply twice a day (make sure it’s unsweetened) and you’ll have nourished cuticles in no time.
NO MORE CHAPPED LIPS
Don’t lick your lips. Especially when you’re out in the cold.
