Maybe it’s because Halloween never really dies to me after October 31, but I’ve been looking to early-80s British band, Adam and the Ants, for some serious wardrobe inspiration lately.
If you’re thinking, Adam and the who? I don’t blame you – they only lasted for about five years before most of us were born.
As short-lived as they were, they did make some waves with their music (Prince Charming, anyone?) but even bigger waves as the early pioneers for the ‘New Romantic’ movement. Think Boy George, Duran Duran, Keith Richards as a swashbuckling pirate, etc.
I don’t seem to be the only one into this eclecticism at the moment – fashion houses have been all up on it, too:
EXHIBIT A: BROCADE & EMBELLISHMENTS
Balmain jacket from SS 2012 Collection vs. Adam and the Ants’ signature look
Versace for H&M vs. Adam and the Ants (second from left’s outfit is so identical it scares me)
EXHIBIT B: VELVET LOVE
Miu Miu’s coveted leather-trimmed velvet blazer from FW11 vs. Adam and the Ants (just pair jacket with floral accents, and voilà!)
EXHIBIT C: WEIRD THINGS IN YOUR HAIR
Gucci’s AW11 updated feathers on the runway vs. Adam Ant’s hair ribbons
EXHIBIT D: FACE PAINT
Vivienne Westwood FW11 Runway vs. Adam and the Ants Kings of the Wild Frontier album cover… Just kidding – don’t do this.
Now go and spread some romanticism.
