FORA-1-1: Face Serums

Even though your medicine cabinet is probably filled with all the major skincare essentials like eye cream, moisturizers, sunscreen and more, it might be missing one very important product: a face serum.

Face serums seem to be flooding beauty aisles everywhere. Sure, they feel amazing on the skin, but what exactly are these powerful skincare products made of? And how do they work? While adopting a facial serum can seem intimidating because of its sometimes hefty price tag, the long list of skincare benefits can make it worth it. Here’s the FORA-1-1 on face serums.

WHAT IS A SERUM?

A serum is a skincare product that you apply after cleansing but before moisturizing to deliver powerful ingredients directly into the skin. A serum is made up of small molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients that can target specific skincare concerns.

Serums have a long list of benefits–but using one regularly can give skin a firmer, smoother texture, make pores appear smaller, increase moisture levels, prevent acne, even the skin tone, and much more! A serum can be applied in the morning, at night, or both but be careful before piling it on. Because serums are super potent, more isn’t always better as the strong ingredients can irritate sensitive skin.

FACE SERUM VS. FACE OIL

Traditional serums are water-based, but as the face oil trend grows, more oils are being marketed as serums, which can make figuring out which is best for your skin confusing.

Water-based serums go on under your face cream to deeply nourish the inner layer of the skin with active ingredients. Face oils go on top of the moisturizer because they have the strength to keep your face hydrated throughout the entire day. Face oils are also great for those with chronic skin condition such as eczema or rosacea as their heavy ingredients are ultra hydrating and water-based serums may further irritation.
