FORA-1-1: Essential Oils And Aromatherapy

Are you feeling stressed? Depressed? Or even in the mood to just pamper yourself because you deserve it? Essential oils are the go-to when it comes to aromatherapy, each with their own therapeutic benefits. The use of essential oils in aromatherapy for healing and promoting well-being have dated back thousands of years, and cosmetic companies are also beginning to incorporate these oils into their beauty brands.

MAIN USES

Typical uses for essential oils include relieving stress, treating insomnia, mood enhancement, relieving muscle pain, reducing headaches, stimulate hair growth, and even boosting your immune system. How cool is that?

While there are benefits to using essential oils, not all of them serve the same purpose, nor should they be used the same way. Some essential oils can be inhaled or applied directly to the skin, while there are others that are best used if diluted or blended in an oil diffuser.

WHICH OIL IS BEST FOR ME?

With so many options, it can be hard to determine which oil is right for you. In the end, it all comes down to what therapeutic benefit you’re looking for.

LAVENDER
As one of the most popular oils out there, lavender oil provides calmness and stress relief (which is probably what makes it so popular—it seems like everyone is always stressed out). It can be used as a sleeping aid as it relaxes the mind, reducing both stress and insomnia. Put a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow, or even rub 2-3 drops in your palms to erase all the tension and stress.

ROSE
Another popular oil, rose oil, is pleasant and provides many benefits for skin. Those who suffer from acne and rosacea can try dabbing a few drops of rose oil onto blemishes to reduce skin imperfections. If you want to balance moisture levels in your skin, add a few drops to your moisturizer as well.

TEA TREE
Like rose oil, tea tree oil is commonly used to treat acne. It’s also effective in treating bacterial infections and itchiness from bug bites and sores. Since it has quite a few antiseptic properties, doctors often recommend using tea tree oil as a healing remedy. Dab a few drops onto any blemishes you have on your skin (but be careful not to use too much or it will dry out your skin). If you have itchiness from bug bites, applying drops of tea tree oil directly on the skin can help soothe the affected areas.

{The Body Shop, $20.00}

PEPPERMINT
Have you ever felt nauseous and someone told you to go drink peppermint tea, and suddenly you felt better right after drinking it? Taking a whiff of peppermint oil can provide the same relief, thanks to its cooling properties. Peppermint oil can give you a sense of refreshment and its soothing properties are great for reducing muscle pain and digestive issues. To enhance mental clarity, add 1-2 drops to your palms and rub them on your temples. When you’re having digestive discomfort, you can rub some peppermint oil on your stomach.

CHAMOMILE
As one of the most ancient and versatile essential oils in the world, chamomile has been traditionally used for a variety of reasons. Proven benefits of chamomile oil include fighting depression and anxiety. Because of its antioxidant properties, it can be used as a natural allergy reliever as well as help alleviate PMS symptoms. All in all, chamomile oil provides so many benefits to your body which is why it is seen so commonly in health stores. Adding 1-2 drops to your moisturizer or shampoo can promote healthier-looking skin and hair. If you want to soothe your body and mind, add 1-2 drops to your herbal tea.

LEMON
Lemons are known to be rejuvenating because of their ability to cleanse and purify toxins from your body. As lemons have bleaching properties, you can use lemon oil to whiten your teeth by mixing it with baking soda and coconut oil. Lemon oil also helps fight depression by boosting your mood, and also provides immune system support.

{Kashmere, $15.09}

INCORPORATING ESSENTIAL OILS INTO YOUR LIFE
Used for thousands of years, essential oils are typically extracted from flowers, seeds, fruits, leaves, and twigs, bringing out a natural essence that supports your overall health and wellness. It’s nice to know that these oils not only have appealing scents, but provide a variety of health benefits  as well.
