New day, new beauty product. As beauty lovers, it seems like we’re always being introduced to the latest and greatest innovations in makeup and skincare–but few products are in for the long haul. But that’s not the case with Bioré! This year, the skincare brand is celebrating the 20th anniversary (that’s right, 20 years!) of their iconic pore strips.
To commemorate the incredible milestone, Bioré enlisted the help of Katie Kavanagh, a recent Humber College grad and Toronto-based graphic designer to create new, limited edition packaging for their Deep Cleansing Pore Strip range. We got the chance to chat with Katie on set at our shoot with Bioré about her inspirations, how she came up with the design, and her favourite pore strip memories. ON HER INSPIRATION
I think it’s just a general curiosity when it comes to designing. I’m just motivated by the curiosity to see what I can actually do and just trying different things and to see how far I can go and how far I can take a design.
ON HER DESIGN FOR BIORÉ
For the design, I was inspired by the thought of it being a celebration. I really wanted to capture that in my designs. I was given guidelines and while a lot of people might think that that’s limiting, finding the creativity within that structure for me was really rewarding. There are a lot of aspects of the design I’m proud of. I’m proud of being creative while still staying on brand and having fun with it as well. I think it’s an eye-catching design that really conveys that we should be having a celebration. It’s very fun and it’s very clean.
HER OWN MEMORIES OF BIORÉ
I think I was probably 12 when I used my first pore strip. It was amazing. There’s nothing more satisfying than pulling it off and seeing what was actually in your pores. When it comes to nose strips, Bioré has been my one and only love.
ON LIVING IN TORONTO
I’m very inspired by music—living in Toronto really enables me to get out onto the scene and see a lot of different types of music and go to a lot of different events. Toronto is a place for young people and Bioré appeals to that young generation—not to be exclusionary because everyone can clean their pores! Toronto always has something going on. It’s very vibrant and I think Bioré’s like that too in terms of the products they offer. Their product diversity mimics the diversity of the city.
ON HER HAIR AND MAKEUP LOOK FOR THE SHOOT
I asked for a lot of volume, I think that that really fits in with the brand—it’s boisterous!
