Mugler’s creative director & Lady Gaga’s fashion director, Nicola Formichetti, discusses his work with the lady we all love. More photos from The Room below.
I just started working with her because I thought she was really cool. Just purely wanted to dress her. When you’re in fashion, back then – I mean, it was only three years ago – you’re not really supposed to work with musicians. It was very like, ok we do high fashion and there’s a whole other music industry, so we weren’t connected.
Everything I did with her was the first time – my first video was ‘Bad Romance’. I had no clue what was going on. I didn’t know all the rules. They were calling me ‘Wardrobe’ – I was like who’s Wardrobe?
When I started working at Mugler, before we started working on the collection, we had to work on Gaga’s Born This Way outfits. We were doing Grammys, and this, and that, and album covers. If I was doing something else before, I just kind of did it through Mugler. And to me, she was a perfect fit.
