The answer to the age old question ‘Where are Ü Now’ can finally be answered, because Ü are here, and so is Justin Bieber’s Purpose album. If you’re anything like us, you locked yourself away from all human contact, put on a fresh pair of drop crotch sweats and listened to Purpose in its entirety.
With the massive build up surrounding this album, we couldn’t wait to dive in and let Justin show us the growing he’s done since his last album. Listen along with us for the first time as we give you a play-by-play with purpose.
Immediately digging the beat. And Justin’s voice. This is one of the songs that Justin officially said was about Selena, and I get it. He’s promising to do better and win her back. Aww.
Lyric: I wont let us just fade away/ after all that we’ve been through/ I’m gonna show you more than I ever could say/ mark my words
Loved this song when it was released. Still love it now. It’s so honest and vulnerable. The Skrillex beat makes this a song that will most definitely be on heavy rotation for the forseeable future.
Lyric: Sometimes its hard to do the right thing/ when the pressures coming down like lightening/ it’s like they want me to be perfect/ when they don’t even know that I’m hurting
All it takes is that familiar ‘tick-tock’ intro beat to conjure up visions of Justin’s abs being licked, so hell yes I like this song. Any song that is associated with dewy metallic abs is a song that I can get on board with. Also LOL girls are so confusing.
Lyric: Don’t know if you’re happy or complaining/ don’t want for us to end where do I start/ first you wanna go to the left then you wanna turn right/ wanna argue all day making love all night
So it seems Justin is starting off his album with the majority of his singles, and I’m not too mad about it. You know Sorry, I know Sorry. You love Sorry, I love Sorry. Let’s move on. But first: DANCE BREAK.
Lyric: Is it too late now to say sorry/’cause I’m missing more than just your body/is it too late now to say sorry/I know I let you down/is it too late to say I’m sorry now
This is the song Ed Sheeran co-wrote, and you can immediately tell. I’m just picturing Ed sitting on a stool in the corner of the recording booth strumming this with a red-faced grin on his face. This is a sweet tune. Super low-key and stripped down so we can hear Bieber’s amazing voice.
Lyric: For all the times that you rained on my parade/ and all the clubs you get in using my name/you think you broke my heart oh girl for goodness sake/you think I’m crying on my own well I ‘aint
Ok so we’re finally getting to some of his unreleased ones. This sounds a little more young/poppy than all of his others, definitely getting a glimpse of the old Biebs. Although he is singing about a ‘casual romantic partner’. The chorus has a good beat, but I’m kind of a little bored of this one. I’d still wanna keep you company though Justin.
Lyric: Tell me what you wanna drink/ I’ll tell you what I got in mind/ I don’t know your name/ but I feel like that’s gonna change/ you ‘aint gotta be my lover for you to call me baby
This is featuring Big Sean so I’m excited. It’s got a smooth vibe right away. Dang, Bieber is going R&B right before our ears. I feel like this is the kind of song you play when you’re home along and pretend that you’re Beyonce doing a sexy chair dance. No? Is that only me?
Lyric: You ‘aint gotta make your mind up/ you ‘aint gotta make your mind up right now/ don’t rush/ no pressure/ you ‘aint gotta make your mind up right now/ I’ll be waiting for you
Ok this song is featuring Travis Scott, and I dig him, so I’m digging this song. Justin’s giving off some major Miguel/Justin Timberlake vibes in this jam. His falsetto is killin’ it and fits right in with the feel of the song. I’m picturing blasting this song while cruising through LA at night with the city lights blurring by. ‘Cause I do that all the time.
Lyric: I only wanna hear your voice/ been around the world/ ‘aint the same without you/ had to find out the hard way/ it don’t make no sense/ unless I’m doing it with you
This is Justin’s track with Halsey, which I’ve been highly anticipating. The chorus is super catchy and I can already tell that this song is gonna be on HEAVY rotation. Play this song when you’re contemplating your relationship, or when you’re doing the dishes.
Lyrics: I’m sinking faster and faster/ between heaven and disaster/ I’m sorry if I made you feel like I’m sitting on the borderline/am I in love with you/ or am I in love with the feeling
The title of this track is making me a little hesitant…is it gonna be super corny? So far the answer is yes. I mean, it’s a super great message! Very inspirational, but just a little bit cheese compared to his other tracks.
Lyrics: I ‘aint perfect/ won’t deny/my reputation’s on the line/ so I’m working on a better me/ life is worth living/ life is worth living/ so live another day
The OG of Bieber’s comeback releases, and still my fave. Serious question though: WILL THIS BEAT EVER GET OLD? I just don’t think so.
Lyrics: I gave you attention when nobody else way paying/I gave you the shirt off my back what you sayin’/to keep you around/ I showed you the game everybody else was playing/ that’s for sure/ and I was on my knees when nobody else was prayin‘
This title is also making me a little scared. It starts off pretty gospel-y, but all of a sudden a techno beat drops. Another case of good-message-but-too-cheese-ball. On the positive side, this song could easily play in a club and the lyrics would be a nice change from all the booty bangerz.
Lyrics: We’re the generation who’s gonna be the one to fight for it/ we’re the inspiration/ do you believe enough to die for it/ who’s got the heart/ who’s heart is the biggest/ wear it on your sleeve /then we can make a difference
The title track starts off very pretty and emotional. And slow, but I mean ok…ok. As the song progresses it’s clear that it’s a conversation between him and God. But remember, you don’t have to be a practicing Christian to listen to this album, just like you don’t have to be a taco to go to Taco Bell.
Lyrics: I put my all into your hands/ here’s my soul to keep/ I let you in with all that I can/ you’re not hard to reach/ and you’ve blessed me with the best gift that I’ve ever known/ you give me purpose
It seems as though we may be through the slow songs. This beat brings it back up! Giving off some fun 80s vibes. The only thing that would make this better is if Carly Rae was on it.
Lyrics: I had a notion/ deep as the ocean/ blue like the sky/ oh my /like a permanent stain wishing i could just wash away
This song immediately feels fun. It’s poppy and bubbly and cute. I want to get used to Justin being obsessed with me, because that’s what he’s saying in this song.
Lyrics: So get used to me checking in all day/ get used to me falling through just to see your face/ there ‘aint a moment I won’t need your embrace/ get used to me touching you/ get used me loving you
Nas is on this track. Ok the first lyrics are ‘happy birthday’, so is this a birthday song? I’m waiting for Nas, but he only comes in right at the end. Justin’s voice is smooth the whole way through though.
Lyrics: You ain’t gotta question it/you already know the answer/the truth don’t make us relevant/hurts but it’s necessary
Is it too weird to say this is baby making music? Too late. I said it. Mark my words, this song will play in a ~HoT ‘n HeAvY~ love scene in a movie this coming year.
Lyric: If I believe in love/and you believe in love/ then we can be in love somehow/ if you want the best for us/ like I want the best for us/ then we gotta learn to trust right now
Justin’s channeling his R&B vibes again in this song. I’m picturing a video montage of a bunch of kids attempting different feats and failing, but they don’t give up and they keep practicing, then at the end they perfect it.
Lyrics: don’t do nothing unless your heart’s in it/don’t do nothing unless you’re all in it
Justin voice sounds like caramel here, it’s nice. There’s also lots of amazing beats going on in this song. It’s definitely a personal song about where he’s at in life and reflecting on his rocky journey. Aw. I like it. I kind of want to be driving along a coastal highway right now.
Lyrics: And if I could/ Forget about the way you love me/ Forget about the world we set in stone/ I’m dreaming with my eyes wide open now/ If only I could hit the ground
We’ve made it to the end. This last song on the album is a stripped down version of Where are Ü Now, and it’s actually pretty amazing. The song is quite sad once it’s sick beat is removed, but in a good way. Play this while you’re curled up in a ball on your bed mourning the loss of your relationship.
Lyrics: I gave you my heart when you said yours was broken/ yes I did/ I gave you the key when the door wasn’t open/ just admit it
