What was once a taboo thing is finally making its way to the forefront. The reality of it is, men need to carry around just as much crap as the girls do. With the fall season coming -especially for those of you going back to school – you realize your pants just don’t have enough pockets for everything you’ll need. Lets take a look at a few of my favorite bags for the upcoming season.
This size seems to be the most realistic for my day-to-day needs. A portfolio bag easily fits the essentials – Wallet, phone, sunglasses, book, a magazine or two, iPad, iPod, camera. Go for a classic look with this faux leather Forever 21 bag (from the Mens department, to boot) or a more eye catching look with this studded DIY vintage leather portfolio.
The tote is the easiest and safest bet for the man bag virgin. It allows you to carry almost everything you could with the portfolio, but with the ease and comfort of the shoulder strap. Plus it’s definitely the most casual of the man bag options. Go for a simple canvas tote to start, easily found at a thrift store for cheap. Or, opt for a statement tote like my YSL Manifesto bag. Find what works best for your wardrobe and style.
THE OVERSIZED BAG
Alright. Enough of these bags that fit just a few daily essentials. You’re a dude who needs a lot of stuff. No problem. The oversized bag is perfect for the student, or even the guy who’s out from morning until night. When considering an oversized bag, looking for something a little higher quality will be worth it in the long run. Think about something like my Esprit leather bag. Long straps for when the load is just too big, front pockets for easier access to things like your wallet and cellphone, and enough room to tote around big books or even a change of clothes.
The backpack is the more universally understood man bag. In my eyes, the backpack has sort of built up a boring reputation as of late. As a more realistic option for a lot of guys the backpack serves a very useful purpose. Having said that, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of fun with it. Try searching vintage stores for the perfect, one-of-a-kind gem like my tribal print bag. It might be a bit of work to find it but it’s definitely worth it when you’re the only guy at your school with an amazing backpack.
Shopping for a man bag can be overwhelming, so hopefully this guide will help you decide which type is perfect for you. And just remember, the perfect amount of confidence is the best accessory with a man bag. If you’re uncomfortable carrying one, it will show.
Good luck and happy fall!
