Read on for the top 5 songs that inspired RALPH the most:
Cover Girl – RuPaul
RuPaul has to get a shoutout because ‘For Myself’ references a classic Ru quote from Drag Queen – “if you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love someone else.” I thought it was such a perfect sentiment to slip into the song, because it’s true – how can you be confident and content with a partner when you’re not in love with yourself?
Long as I Live – Toni Braxton
Sonically, Toni Braxton was the inspiration behind ‘For Yourself’. She created this sexy, powerful come-back track that had tenderness but felt very strong. I loved that feeling. I also wanted to incorporate more RnB and soul elements into the album, so this song was a nice influence – it has such a vibe and that 90 BPM is perfect for the words and feelings that she’s singing.
Bellyache – Billie Eilish
I’ve been obsessed with Billie Eilish for awhile now, I think her songwriting is fascinating and so original. I spent a lot of time over the last year listening to her tracks and feeling encouraged to try new things throughout my album – melodies or weird lyrical pairings of words. She helped me push myself to embrace “weird” or “unexpected”.
No One Knows Me (Like the Piano) -Sampha
I’ve loved this song since it came out, it just does something to my heart. It’s so tender and private, it feels like he’s singing just to you from the piano bench at his grandmothers home. I think it’s so special to create a song like that, something that feels honest and moving and makes you even tear up a lil when you’re feeling emotional. Cereal was definitely inspired by this track and all songs like this.
Naked – Ella Mai
I’m really excited for Ella Mai, I think her songs are fire and her lyrics are stunning. This song speaks to me so hard, it’s so unabashedly honest and raw and vulnerable, but still feels strong. I’m constantly trying to channel this into my music, this raw honesty. In ‘September Fades’, I let myself admit that I f***ed up and hurt someone, maybe because I’m more complicated than I thought.
