MIXTAPE: Unexpected Collaborations

Mixing and matching is always encouraged in the fashion world, but how well does the tick play out in music? Can the brash lyrics of a garage band play nice with Afro-pop-laced rhymes of a reggae band? 2013’s edition of The Coach taught us that two heads (or sounds) are certainly better than one. First The XX blew our minds when they invited Solange on stage to collaborate on a cover of Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire”. The rhythmic indulgence ensued when French indie rockers Phoenix invited R&B heavyweight R. Kelly to join them onstage for a duet on Kelly’s longtime classic “Ignition”.
