A Visual Guide To The ‘Girls’ And Their Boys

After binge watching seasons 1-4 of HBO’s Girls in preparation for Sunday’s premiere, it came to our attention–some of the girls share a lot more than just friendship.

New York is a big city, but when it comes to finding the one, Hannah, Shoshanna, Marnie and Jessa’s search sometimes hasn’t strayed far from within their friendship circle.

HOW TO BE: Jemima Kirke

Unless you happened to attend the Rhode Island School of Design with Jemima Kirke, or you’ve been to her mom’s vintage boutique in NYC, you probably hadn’t heard of Jemima Kirke until you became addicted to GIRLS. Jemima Kirke’s fame may be primarily from the show we all love watching every Sunday evening, but there are a ton of reasons why we want to be her. You might not be able to emulate her faint British accent or score a starring role in GIRLS, but there are still lots of ways to be Jemima Kirke. read more…

Borderline Detrimental Life Lessons Learned from GIRLS

I want to preface this article by saying I love GIRLS. This show is absolutely hilarious, and I’ve never watched a show that elicits “I’ve actually said that!!” more than this one. However, there are some gaping holes in the fabric that is this plot, and some general footsteps for the viewers that are better left unfollowed. I will dispense this information now. read more…

MIXTAPE: About A Girl

This month in music: Lily Allen calls her upcoming album Sheezus, Pharrell Williams drops his highly anticipated record G I R L, and Beyoncé continues to top all charts (music and otherwise).

Alternately speaking, the sisterhood has got its hold on the music scene.

This week, lady power goes worldwide for International Women’s Day: so let’s take a moment to commemorate the gurls who we’ve come to know through the songs about them. You know them by name – greats like Sweet Caroline, Eleanor Rigby, Mrs. Robinson, and Sheena the punk rocker. Without these classic babes we may not have our modern heroines of song. Could Simon & Garfunkle’s “For Emily Wherever, I May Find Her” be the predecessor of Bon Iver’s “For Emma”?

Either way, we present to you the ultimate soundtrack to women crush Wednesdays. In the name of all-girl bands, frontwomen, and lady babes everywhere, press play! read more…

MIXTAPE: Songs On Film

Best in show, these songs on film are the real stars of Hollywoodland: and, from the sounds of it, Spike Jonze, Baz Luhrmann and Quentin Tarantino agree. With the Academy Awards only days away, there’s no better soundtrack to get you in the spirit than our playlist of tunes written specifically for the silver screen.
The feature length film score is an audiophile’s haven. Home of many an unlikely cover, collaboration, and remix, soundtracks are the icing on top of the cake. (Note: this cake is probably a prop – DO NOT EAT!) And when the credits roll and you think it’s all over, there’s always exit music (for a film) to keep you wanting more. If you’re lucky enough, it’s by Radiohead. read more…

GIRL CRUSH: Funny Gals *V-Day Edition*

Valentine’s Day is when you’re supposed to admit to your crushes, right? Unfortunately, all of my serious celebrity crushes are taken, and more importantly don’t know I exist. So, this Valentine’s Day, I decided to compile my celeb girl crushes. Turns out, I apparently have a type because they are all the most hilarious female celebs around. Like all great girl crushes, It’s not so much that I want them, but that I want to be them. So please, give me a combination of Lena Dunham’s #girlpower, Kristen Wiig’s impersonation skills, and Ellen’s talk show, and I’ll be on my way to getting a real boyfriend for next Valentine’s Day. read more…

An Ode to: Zosia Mamet

Now that a new season of GIRLS is upon us, it’s time to meditate on/obsess over our favourite characters and the real people behind them. Hence, an ode to Zosia Mamet, otherwise known as the bubbly and incredibly naive Shoshanna Shapiro. Here are a few reasons why we love to fangirl over her. read more…
