If fashion wasn’t already one of the most intricate areas of art (a tall, but deserved, order), it’s been further complicated throughout history by its phonetics. Design words – from ombré to décolletage, haute to ruching – and the emergence of new, exotic designer names – have been mangled by even Vogue’s most faithful follower. We’ve all had one of those read-it-but-never-once-said-it words touch our tongue leaving us bruised and broken, and vowing to silence rather than relive the horror of pronouncing Prabal Gurung (prub-le ger-rung) in public ever again.
