The Five Women Who Made Me: Sherren Lee

Behind every successful woman is more women who inspired her, lifted her up and supported her throughout her career.

Canadian director Sherren Lee has been writing, directing, and producing her own work since 2009, but before then, Lee actually wanted to be an actress. It wasn’t until she directed a play in university that things clicked and she realized directing was her career path. We recently caught up with the Taiwan-born, Montreal raised, and currently Toronto-based filmmaker to talk about what it’s like being a female director and to ask her about the five women who shaped her career.

FORA FIRSTS: Julia Michaels

At 24 years old, Julia Michaels has opened for Shawn Mendes, Niall Horan and Maroon 5, she’s written songs for such artists as Justin Bieber, Gwen Stefani, Demi Lovato and Fifth Harmony, she’s been nominated for two Grammy awards– and yet she still crumpled to the floor when she heard Britney Spears sing one of her songs.

Growing up, fashion designer Mary Young always knew she’d be an entrepreneur. After studying Fashion Communications at Ryerson University, she launched her namesake line MARY YOUNG in 2014 to fill a gap in the intimates market that allows women to celebrate their natural shape. Mary says that every woman is the ideal woman and feels that transforming the way women see their bodies starts at the base level: lingerie.
