This year’s Olympic Games in Rio are riddled with amazing black, female competitors. From veterans Serena and Venus Williams to newcomer Simone Biles, there is no shortage of black girl ~magic~ on our screens this summer. As the opening ceremonies kick off tomorrow, we can’t help but some of the past and present athletes that have inspired us to find our own magic.
Since I’m not exactly a frequenter of mountainous slopes, up until a couple of months ago, I had yet to cross paths with snowboarder Spencer O’Brien. But luckily, technology is awesome and Instagram is readily available to allow non-cool girls like myself to connect with girls cool enough to compensate for my aforementioned non-coolness. And, within days of sending out a (lovingly) handwritten Instagram DM, I had an email from this Vancouver-based snowboarder sitting in my inbox.

The Olympics are pretty much the mother of all sporting events. Even though they claim to bring countries together, what I like best is that they bring Canada together. #CANADAPRIDE
During the Olympics we aren’t Jets vs. Leafs, Canucks vs…. lol jk I know nothing about hockey – the point is that during the Olympics Canada rulez even more than usual.
